Manpower partners with NAACP for computer training

Manpower Inc. and the Milwaukee branch of the NAACP announced plans for a program designed to provide free adult computer and business administration skills training to the community.

"The objective of the program is to provide an academic as well as a comfortable learning environment for students of all ages," said Jerry Ann Hamilton, president of the Milwaukee NAACP branch. "Manpower's online university, the Global Learning Center, is an effective tool that can bridge the gap between education and employment in the minority community."

The Global Learning Center offers more than 5,000 hours of online training that encompasses software applications, professional development skills, business skills, information technology and telecommunications.

"We are very excited about this partnership with the NAACP.

Corper initiates computer training programme for youths

In a bid to empower youths through skills acquisition, a youth corper posted to Oduoha-Ogbakiri community in Emohua Local Government Area, Rivers State, Mr. Emmanuel Akinola has initiated a computer training programme for youths of the community.

The corper who also donated a computer to kick start the programme, said he was motivated by the willingness of the youths to acquire skills but without motivation and encouragement from the community.

He said though he studied mechanical engineering, he is aware that computer education is very important in every aspect of life which made him to initiate the programme as his own contribution towards the empowerment of the youths in the community.

Mr. Akinola disclosed that the directorate of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) in Rivers State and Abuja are aware of the programme and have promised to commission it as soon as possible in addition to the provision of more computer and posting of corpers to the centre to ensure the success of the programme.

Young Persons from Eastern Westmoreland Taking Part in Computer ...

Sixty computer scholarships valued at $2.5 million, have been offered to unemployed and at-risk young persons between 17 and 25 years of age from Bluefields and surrounding communities in Eastern Westmoreland.

The 60 persons are currently taking part in a six-week computer training course, which will last until September 29. The course is being funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Microsoft Unlimited Potential Project, under the theme: 'Youth Inclusion Through Information and Communication Technologies'.

The programme covers specific areas such as, computer and word processing fundamentals, digital media, internet and web development, and will be carried out by the Bluefields People's Community Association (BPCA) at Belmont, near Bluefields.

Chairman of the BPCA, Keith Wedderburn, told JIS News that this course has come on the heels of a similar one which the association held for 222 young people.
